The author’s inspiration:

Mac Moonstone is a recently retired Air Force Colonel, he has served in many high-level positions over his career and has traveled the world. Since a young age he has loved to write and to tell stories, but knew it was best to wait until he hung up his uniform before publishing.

When the Ukraine conflict started in February 2022, Mac, like the rest of the world was surprised at the resistance that the smaller Ukraine was able to the larger Russia; and he took particular note of images and stories coming back of Ukrainian farm tractors pulling away Russian tanks. It was an incredible image and Mac knew there was a children’s story of inspiration to pull from those images.

This is his first book, but he is already working on a second that introduce new heroes in the South Pacific Ocean.

FUN FACTS:

1.) Mac was able to team with an incredible Illustrator team from Spain, Creative Illustrations Studio, who brought Johhny the Tractor, Tanya the Tank, and the rest of the characters to life. The illustrations are vivid and exciting.

2.) Mac originally outlined the text of Tanks and Tractors: A Tale of Bravery and Bond in early 2022, but due to his position he decided to fold it up and set it aside. A year and a half later, he decided he was going to retire and with that publish the book.

An excerpt (mid way through):

Johnny was worried but didn’t give up. He was always coming up with new ideas. One day, it started raining. It rained and rained until areas of the fields turned into big pools of mud.

The tanks, heavy and bulky, got stuck in the mud. Tanya was one of them.

Johnny saw Tanya struggling in the mud. He knew he could leave her there, but Johnny was kind. Johnny was not just a tractor, he was a friend, a helper, a problem-solver.  Even though Tanya was a Tank and they were supposed to be on different sides, Johnny knew in his heart that everyone deserved help when they needed it.

With a deep breath, he revved his engine, making it rumble like a friendly lion’s roar, and trudged over to Tanya. The mud squelched under his big tractor wheels, but he pushed on, showing his brave determination.

Reaching Tanya, he attached a strong, sturdy rope to her. The rope was just like the ones used in a tug-of-war game, but this was no game. This was a rescue mission.
